When a company announces a recall, market withdrawal, or safety alert, the FDA posts the company's announcement as a public service. FDA does not endorse either the product or the company. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 26, 2023- West Sacramento, CA, Gear Isle is voluntarily recalling the following products listed in the table below to the consumer level. FDA analysis has found the products to be tainted with sildenafil and tadalafil. Sildenafil and tadalafil are ingredients known as Phosphodiesterase Inhibitors (PDE-5) inhibitors found in FDA-approved products for the treatment of male erectile dysfunction. The presence of sildenafil and tadalafil in these products renders them unapproved drugs for which the safety and efficacy have not been established and, therefore, subject to recall. Risk Statement: Consumption of products with undeclared sildenafil and tadalafil may interact with nitrates found in some prescription drugs (such as nitroglycerin) and may cause a significant drop in blood pressure that may be life threatening. Building muscle mass after 30 isn't hard, but it does take finding the right strength-training program and being consistent with it. According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, these losses typically begin after a person turns the big 3-0. By the time people are 75 or 80, most have lost half the muscle mass they had in their 20s, reports a review published in the Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology in October 2014.
When you really think about it, this is a pretty good question. In fact, maybe it can best be answered by posing a similar question -- can you walk around the world? The answer? Sure you can, just point yourself east, or west, put one foot in front of the other and you're on your way. At least that's the simple answer. But what about food, water, shelter and even walking shoes? What do you do when you lose your hat in a sandstorm in the middle of the Kalahari Desert, or have fend off mounted bandits in Outer Mongolia armed only with a battered umbrella? Yes, these are points to consider before setting out on a round-the-world journey. But given time and care it's possible -- the build just has to be taken one step at a time. Today there are a number of companies offering kits to modify existing cars into custom vehicles -- think of using an old Pontiac Fiero as a donor vehicle for a Ferrari lookalike.

Others offer a selection of parts and accessories to make a one-off mongrel machine that nonetheless looks like a custom touring car straight from England's Lakes District. Variations abound. Or a person can begin fabricating the car literally from the wheels up if he or she chooses. While short cuts are possible, assembling your own car is a daunting task. This is definitely not something for the faint of heart; however, amateur and professional builders do it every day, and the pay off can be something to behold -- or hide, in some cases. Read on to find out more about the joys and challenges of making your own car. They're also usually mechanically inclined, have access to tools, and most of all, they're passionate about building the perfect car -- just like Steve Graber. In 1997 Graber began building a replica Ferrari 250 GTO working from the chassis of a Datsun 280 Z. The Arizona computer animator [http://www.sapijaszko.net/index.php?title=What_s_The_Most_Fun_You_Can_Have_For__20_000_ alpha surge male testosterone booster] and programmer (with a passion for cars) finished the project in a year, and in 1999 Graber's car was featured on the cover of Kit Car Magazine.

Worse still, he said he began thinking he could do better. By 2001, Graber's GTO replica was sold to another auto enthusiast in Georgia, and the seed for building a car from the ground up was planted in Graber's head. In 2002 he began building the La Bala, a custom-fabricated roadster with a graceful exterior mounted to a powertrain capable of about 180 horsepower -- a combination of muscle and mass. Occupying one half of the family garage for four years, the project produced not only a car but an education, too. Graber, now 43, said. Graber explained how a person embarking on a build cannot think through challenges and problems by considering them as isolated incidents. In a car, each layer or system in the car, is connected to other systems, which are in turn connected to other parts. But, he added, if you're focused and determined, each of the individual problems can be surmounted. As Graber pointed out, cars are essentially interrelated systems and interlocking problems.

Keep reading to find out about those systems and see what you may have to deal with if you decide to assemble a car. In the early part of the last century, the Popular Mechanics Company produced four collections of tips, tricks and projects culled from their magazine and geared towards boys, both young in age and young of heart, titled "The Boy Mechanic" series. In Book 3, originally published in 1919, they provided plans for a homemade "Boys' Motor Car," styled after the "bearcat roadster" popular at the time. The plans suggested using a motorcycle engine to power the car, as well as the associated wiring from the motorcycle for spark and ignition control. All other components were cobbled together or custom built from old pieces of machinery and pipes. The frame, seat, hood and trunk were made from wood, and the wheels were strong bicycle tires riding on solid axles.

The author, P.P. Avery, said the boy could call in skilled mechanics if more help was needed during construction, but most of the work could be assembled on his own. And the reward for what amounts to literally years of effort? Graber said. "It's a great feeling." Hance said he has a similar feeling. If you'd like more information about building your own car and other related topics, follow the links on the next page. Most professional mechanics maintain a tool kit with a total cost of around $10,000 -- often more. A person embarking on building a kit car can expect to invest at least that much in tools. For instance, Sears sells a 1,468-piece tool kit suitable for just about every task on a car for $8,700. Of course, this doesn't include a tool chest for storing the collection, an air compressor to power the impact tools, a jack or [https://trevorjd.com/index.php/Consequently_Prices_Of_Raw_Cotton_Rose alpha surge male testosterone booster] jack stands, a creeper and a large first aid kit, all of which will easily push the price well over $10,000. And don't forget: you still have to buy the car and the kit. Hance, Vern. Treasurer, Northern California Kit Car Club. National Kit Car Club.
Just like us, dogs can benefit from a stretching and strengthening program. It can build and maintain muscle mass, improve body awareness and balance, and provide a physical and mental workout. Canine athletes definitely gain an advantage from this type of conditioning, but senior dogs also need to stay limber. Couch potatoes and bored dogs can reap rewards, too, since the activity is mentally stimulating. Plus, some of these exercises can even be tailored to puppies as part of their training and socialization. While you can hire a professional trainer or [https://nerdgaming.science/wiki/User:RufusReiber8 shop Alpha Surge Male] enroll in a class, you can also provide your dog with simple conditioning exercises at home. All it takes are a few basic props and some motivating treats. Before you begin any canine conditioning program, make sure your vet approves. For example, although senior dogs need to stay limber, a case of severe arthritis might make certain movements inappropriate.

Puppies also shouldn’t engage in a variety of actions, like jumping or extended balancing, until their bones have finished developing. Although commonly called "puppy push-ups," this exercise is a great warm-up and muscle builder for dogs of any age. Plus, it has the benefit of honing basic obedience behaviors. A simple puppy push-up is having your dog move from a sit position to a down position, then back into a sit. To increase the difficulty, teach your dog to stand on cue, which can be done using the lure-and-reward method. Hold a treat to your sitting dog’s nose, then slowly pull forward to lure your dog into a standing position. Once your dog understands all three positions-sit, stand, and down-you can combine them into a more complex puppy push-up. Or, to increase the muscle-building, have your dog go from a stand to a down and then back to a stand again without the sit in the middle.

Stretching is great for keeping your dog limber. It’s also useful for warming up before exercise and cooling down after. But how do you tell your dog to do it? One way is to teach your dog to stretch on cue. This can be done by capturing behavior your dog does naturally. As soon as you see your dog stretching, like after a nap, mark the movement with a clicker or marker word, then immediately praise and reward them. Pretty soon your dog will be offering the behavior to earn a treat. At that point, you can add a verbal cue. Now, you can ask your dog to stretch as part of your exercise sessions. Another method involves the use of a target stick. You can buy a target stick or make your own by coloring one end of a dowel rod. First, teach your dog to touch the end of the stick with their nose.

Most dogs will do this naturally when first presented with the stick because they want to smell it. As soon as your dog’s nose touches the end of the stick, mark the action with a clicker or marker word, then reward. Once your dog understands the value of touching the end of the stick, you can use the stick to lure them into various stretching positions. For example, for a neck stretch, hold the stick above your dog’s head to get a neck extension or place it on a shoulder to get a side stretch. Walking in a figure-eight pattern is a great way to stretch your dog’s back and [https://www.vstu.ru/bitrix/rk.php?goto=https://chessdatabase.science/wiki/Unlock_Your_Potential_With_Alpha_Surge_Male:_A_Comprehensive_Guide shop Alpha Surge Male] improve spinal flexibility. All you need are two props-cones, garbage cans, or even food tins. Simply place the two objects several feet apart and lead your dog around and through them by luring with a treat. To tighten the turn and therefore the stretch, move the objects closer together. You can even have your dog weave between your legs as you stand with your feet apart.

Teaching your dog to balance on various surfaces helps build muscle and increase body awareness. Start with a steady surface and simply teach your dog to place all four paws on it. A good starter prop would be an upside-down shallow plastic storage bin. The goal isn’t height but to get your dog to stand on the object. Once your dog understands the game, you can introduce the element of balance. Choose objects that are safe but will require some core work on your dog’s part. For example, large sofa cushions will work for large dogs and smaller pillows for smaller dogs. You can even use an inflatable canine exercise disc. As long as the surface is a bit unsteady underfoot, your dog will have to work to stand on top. As your dog gains confidence, you can even encourage balancing with their front paws on one object and back paws on another. Another way to build strength and body awareness is with a wobble board.

Some people are looking for the best fat-burning muscle-building diet, and they may wonder if they can get more muscular. If that's your case, you might want an easy weight-loss and muscle-gain workout plan to get started. Learning some basic principles and doing simple exercises will help you reach your health goals. The most important thing is that you regularly work out. Doing regular physical exercise can help you lose belly fat within a few months, according to a November 2018 report in the journal Obesity. Doing resistance exercises like weightlifting can cause an increase in muscle mass. These changes seem to happen no matter how much you weigh. A July 2017 report in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research confirmed this effect by testing two types of resistance training programs in 25 women with overweight. Researchers compared a traditional (straight sets) resistance-training program and [http://girl.naverme.com/bbs/board.php?bo_table=free&wr_id=8490 Alpha Surge Male supplement] a pyramidal-resistance training program. The study lasted for several months. Subjects exercised on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays for two eight-week sessions separated by a 12-week break.

They participated in both types of resistance training. Each type of resistance exercise also caused an increase in muscle mass. These changes happened without affecting insulin-growth factor or testosterone. You can take advantage of the muscle-building power of resistance training with a simple program using elastic bands. These accessories are an excellent way to get started, but you will want to gradually include weight training. Consider working with a personal trainer, a professional who can plot a course of action, track your progress and guarantee your safety. Eccentric cycling involves pushing back against motor-driven pedals. This exercise is known to cause hypertrophy - an increase in muscle cell size. A January 2019 paper in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports demonstrated the positive effect of eccentric cycling in 24 adolescents with overweight. The children exercised three times a week for 12 weeks. Each session lasted for 30 minutes.

At the end of the study, the scientists compared the results found before the training to those found after training. Eccentric cycling caused a 3.8 percent increase in the kids' whole-body lean mass. Concentric cycling produced similar results - it caused a 1.5 percent increase in lean mass. Both types of cycling also increased the strength of the subjects' quadriceps muscles. This exercise targets your leg muscles and triggers hypertrophy, according to the January 2019 paper in the Scandinavian Journal of Medicine and Science in Sports. Smaller changes happened with concentric cycling - a 1.5 percent increase in whole-body lean mass - but these effects remain impressive and easy to reach. Aerobic exercises like running can also help people gain muscle mass. An April 2017 article in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society nicely illustrated the positive impact of aerobic training in 60 older adults with age-related muscle wasting and obesity. Compared to a control group, adults in the treatment group had greater muscle mass by the end of the experiment.

Interestingly, these differences still remained a month after the study - even though the participants had stopped working out. This study shows the power of aerobic training. Muscle wasting typically happens very soon after you quit exercising. For [http://Smosar.sarmo.ru/bitrix/redirect.php?goto=https://chessdatabase.science/wiki/Introducing_Alpha_Surge_Male:_Your_Ultimate_Testosterone_Support_And_Performance_Booster alpha surge male supplement] example, a June 2019 report from Maastricht University showed that a week of bedrest caused much muscle loss in 10 healthy adults. Aerobic exercise can help prevent muscle loss and help you achieve positive results by increasing your metabolism. Your choices span a wide range - from walking to swimming. Even dancing can help you gain mass, according to an October 2015 report in the Journal of Aging and Physical Activity which tested 34 older women. Read more: What Is the Difference Between Aerobic & Anaerobic Exercise? Adding resistance exercise to this routine can let you keep your muscle mass as you lose weight. Trainers call this combination concurrent training.
Building muscles naturally is a long-term process, requiring patience and discipline. With the right training programs and proper diet, building muscles at home, even without weights, is achievable for most people. Working out regularly can help you not only build muscles but also aid in overall health and well-being. One essential but often overlooked aspect of health and well-being is health insurance. Even the fittest of individuals can sometimes suffer from an unexpected or unplanned medical emergency. Claims are subject to terms and conditions set forth under health insurance policy. Let’s explore how you can build muscles at home, starting with the basics of the process. To know how to build muscle mass correctly, one must first understand the basics of muscle-building. Muscle growth depends to a large extent on the amount of protein your body removes and deposits. If there is higher protein removal than deposition, there is a loss of muscle mass. If the protein deposition is higher than the removal, there is muscle growth.

The factors primarily in your control to build muscles are diet - protein and other nutrients - and resistance training. Resistance training is a process wherein you use resistance (in the form of any kind of weight, including body weight) against your muscles, and force your muscles to overcome that resistance, leading to gradual muscle growth. When coupled with healthy strategies for reducing body fat, you can reveal your stronger, defined six-pack and have those coveted visible abs.

However, understand that training your six-pack as a component of a strong core and bringing your body fat levels low enough for visible abdominals are two separate goals - and they should be thought of as such. This article breaks down everything you need to know about six-pack abs, including what they are, what factors affect abdominal development, how to think about ab-related goals, and a few tips for building a strong, functional core. Finally, you’ll learn a few overall strategies that may help reveal your hard-earned six-pack abs. What makes up the six-pack? The term "six-pack’" typically refers to the rectus abdominis muscle. The moniker "six-pack" comes from its appearance of visible rows of 4-8 distinct muscular segments that you can see on individuals with relatively low body fat. Although many additional important muscles comprise your core, the rectus abdominis is the most superficial one. As such, it’s the muscle that gives chiseled abs their distinct appearance.

Likewise, because it’s the outermost layer of ab muscle, it does not do much in terms of stability of the spinal column. The six-pack comprises the rectus abdominis muscle, which flexes the spine. What makes the six-pack visible? The strength and appearance of your six-pack are influenced by a variety of factors. In terms of having a strong rectus abdominis, regularly training this muscle directly through core exercises can help your six-pack be more effective at moving your spine. The biggest underlying factor regarding six-pack visibility is how much subcutaneous body fat you store around your stomach. It’s important to know that not having visible six-pack abdominals doesn’t mean your core is weak, or even that you are carrying excess weight. Generally, visible six-pack abs require a body fat percentage much lower than that needed for general health benefits. While there’s no universal body fat percentage at which six-packs become visible, typical ballpark ranges are 10-12% body fat for men and 16-20% body fat for women.

These numbers are well below those needed for optimal general health and fitness despite the popular association between visible abs and optimal fitness. Greater levels of visceral fat may not affect the visibility of your six-pack to the same extent as subcutaneous fat, despite the fact that excess visceral fat is a greater health concern. Your genetics also play a big role in where you store body fat, which greatly influences the specific body fat percentage at which your abs will be visible. If you tend to store more fat in your hips, your abs will be visible at higher body fat percentages and vice versa. Lifestyle factors, such as sleep and stress levels, also affect fat gains, which will affect the visibility of your abs. Suggested reasons for this include sleep deprivation’s negative effects on ghrelin, leptin, and insulin, which are key hormones for regulating hunger and fat storage in the body. Beyond the above factors, a surplus calorie intake will typically lead to fat gains over time, which will decrease the visibility of your six-pack - independent of any other factors.

The visibility of your abdominals depends on your body fat percentage and where you tend to store fat. Lifestyle factors and genetics can affect your overall tendency to store and burn fat. Should having six-pack abs be my goal in core training? While it’s OK to strive for aesthetic fitness goals like having visible abs, the truth is that your core and abdominals play a much more important role than just being nice to look at. The rectus abdominis is just one of many muscles in the so-called core, which is a series of muscles that span the hips to the thoracic spine and include superficial and deep layers, as well as different muscles along the front, side, and back of your lower torso. Collectively, the core muscles stabilize the spine and allow it to bend and twist as required for functional activities. The biggest benefits of core training have nothing to do with visible abdominals. Furthermore, the abdominals are just one of many core muscles you should target in your routine.

Corresponding Author: Roland van den Tillaar PhD. Authors submitted their contribution of the article to the editorial board. The purpose of this study was to compare the kinematics and muscle activation patterns of regular free-weight bench press (counter movement) with pure concentric lifts in the ascending phase of a successful one repetition maximum (1-RM) attempt in the bench press. Our aim was to evaluate if diminishing potentiation could be the cause of the sticking region. Since diminishing potentiation cannot occur in pure concentric lifts, the occurrence of a sticking region in this type of muscle actions would support the hypothesis that the sticking region is due to a poor mechanical position. Eleven [https://pgdservis.ru/bitrix/rk.php?goto=https://chessdatabase.science/wiki/Unlock_Your_Potential_With_Alpha_Surge_Male:_A_Comprehensive_Guide male vitality supplement] participants (age 21.9 ± 1.7 yrs, body mass 80.7 ± 10.9 kg, body height 1.79 ± 0.07 m) conducted 1-RM lifts in counter movement and in pure concentric bench presses in which kinematics and EMG activity were measured.

In both conditions, a sticking region occurred. However, the start of the sticking region was different between the two bench presses. In addition, in four of six muscles, the muscle activity was higher in the counter movement bench press compared to the concentric one. Considering the findings of the muscle activity of six muscles during the maximal lifts it was concluded that the diminishing effect of force potentiation, which occurs in the counter movement bench press, in combination with a delayed muscle activation unlikely explains the existence of the sticking region in a 1-RM bench press. Most likely, the sticking region is the result of a poor mechanical force position. The bench press is one of the most popular exercises used in strength training for the upper body. A successful bench press lift is performed when the barbell is first lowered to the chest and then moved to a fully extended position again.

Several studies have investigated the kinematics in bench pressing and have shown that there is a sticking region during maximal lifts (Madsen and McLaughlin, 1984; Newton et al., 1997). In this region, the pushing force is less than gravity on the barbell, leading to a deceleration of the barbell. The reason for the existence of this sticking region is unclear. Elliott et al. (1989) and Madsen and McLaughlin (1984) hypothesized that during the sticking region a poor mechanical force position occurs in which the lengths and [https://45.76.249.136/index.php?title=Bodybuilding_Anabolic_Supplements male vitality supplement] mechanical advantages of the muscles involved are such that their capacity to exert torque is reduced. Van den Tillaar and Ettema (2010) found that the muscle activity of only the agonistic major pectoralis muscles and the anterior part of the deltoid muscles increased from the sticking to the post-sticking region during the upward movement. They proposed that the start of a sticking region occurs, not because of a lack of strength, but due to diminishing of enhanced force (i.e., potentiation induced by the immediately preceding eccentric contraction) at the start of the concentric movement.

When this strength capacity is diminishing, a delayed neural reaction must occur (Walshe et al., 1998) enhancing the muscle activity level so that the resultant force matches the demands of the attempt. In the above mentioned studies the bench press was performed with a downward and subsequent upward movement (muscular stretch-shortening cycle), which can cause potentiation and its diminishment over time and thereby the occurrence of the sticking region. Since in pure concentric lifts these mechanisms cannot play a significant role, these lifts can be used to test whether the sticking region is caused by potentiation and an accompanying delayed neural reaction (Van den Tillaar and Ettema, 2010), or if it is due to a poor mechanical force position (Madsen and McLaughlin, 1984; Elliott et al., 1989). Wilson et al. 1991) showed that subjects can lift around 14% more with a counter movement bench press than with a pure concentric lift.

Furthermore, they found that the force output only during the first 200ms was lower when performing pure concentric bench presses. However, they only analysed the first 0.5s of the ascending part of the lift. Moreover, they did not explain the reason for these differences (and did not perform any EMG measurements of the involved muscles). In squatting, Walshe et al. 1998) also found differences in force output only during the first 300ms of the ascending part. They showed that there were no differences in muscle activity between the two conditions. Walshe et al. (1998) concluded that the difference was caused by the attainment of a higher active state before the start of the upwards movement. It was also hypothesized that the contractile element potentiation was a significant contributor to the performance of the counter movement performance. Therefore the aim of the present study was two folded: firstly to compare the kinematics and muscle activation patterns of the regular free-weight bench press (counter movement) with pure concentric lifts and secondly, to test if diminishing potentiation could be the cause of the sticking region.
They may interfere with some medical conditions that you are having, or worse, they might even lead to possible complications that you won’t like at all. Nothing can still surpass the natural way on how to grow muscle. Diet modification and proper workout training are fundamental tasks to be able to develop those muscles and keep them growing at a moderate level. You can achieve this through various methods, including increasing weight, reps, or sets. Mind you; this method is not for the faint of heart. As the name suggests, it demands more and more from your muscles. The line that sits between what is within the limit and beyond the limit is extended. Curious? Keep reading to find out more about it. What is Progressive Overload? Progressive overload is a fundamental principle in weightlifting that involves increasing the demands on your muscles over time. This means you need to lift heavier weights, perform more reps, or do more sets to continue progressing. The concept of progressive overload is based on the idea that you need to challenge your body continually to see continued progress and improvements in strength and muscle growth.
First things first, flip that bottle around and take a good look at the ingredients list. You want a supplement that contains high-quality, scientifically-backed ingredients. Look for key muscle-building compounds like whey or plant-based protein, creatine, branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), beta-alanine, (or fish oil). Less is more-avoid supplements loaded with fillers and questionable additives. Across our team of MH fitness editors and experts, we've tested dozens of the best supplements for muscle growth to figure out which products work, and which are a waste of your precious coin. While each user's preferences and experiences with a muscle growth supplement are unique to a myriad of physiological factors, some products clearly outperformed others in terms of ingredients, price, and serving size. Some enthusiasts know hundreds, others are contempt with the essential ones. But every developer does know some. Debugging would be tedious if we couldn’t pause and resume a program’s execution with the keyboard. In recent weeks, I have been able to significantly expand my keyboard shortcut knowledge with my new side-project web app KeyCombiner. In particular, I knew only a few shortcuts for the web-based tools I am using in my daily work. This post describes how it took me less than 1 hour to learn 50 new key combinations. Fortunately, KeyCombiner keeps a detailed history of a user’s learning progress, so that I could write this post retrospectively. Admittedly, the 42 minutes of learning time was interrupted by breaks, and the process involved some other tasks, such as creating the collection of shortcuts I wanted to learn. However, I did, in fact, spend only 42 minutes practicing the shortcuts and have had similar results with other shortcut collections.

The first step to learning new keyboard shortcuts is to define which. I don’t think it is efficient to try and learn all shortcuts for a particular application. You will end up with many that you do not use in your daily work and that you will soon forget again. Creating custom collections of keyboard shortcuts is perhaps the greatest strength of KeyCombiner and sets it apart from any other tool. Within minutes or less, you can have a personal collection by importing shortcuts from popular apps. I like to compare its approach to how you build playlists in music software. Instead of browsing your favorite artists’ albums, you browse categories of your favorite applications. Instead of adding songs to your playlists, you can add keyboard shortcuts to your collections. For this challenge, I created a new collection named "50 to learn". Then, I browsed KeyCombiner’s public collections and started to import everything I wanted to learn.

As my goal was to get better with web application shortcuts, I focused on the public collections for Gmail, GitHub, GDrive, Docs, Slack, and Twitter. Collecting shortcuts from KeyCombiner’s public Gmail collection. Additionally, I added a few shortcuts for Smartgit manually. It is a graphical Git client that I am using extensively. For some reason, I never learned its shortcuts. Unfortunately, KeyCombiner does not yet have a public shortcut collection for Smartgit that I could rely on. Manually adding keyboard shortcuts to my new collection. You can browse the resulting collection with 50 keyboard shortcuts here: 50 to learn. I am afraid you will have to trust me that I did not know these shortcuts already before this experiment. However, as reassurance, you can check my previous blog post covering all the shortcuts I was using until a few weeks ago. The list there does not include these new ones. To validate the success of this experiment, I will simply use KeyCombiner’s confidence metric.

Strength training and muscle mass provide all sorts of health benefits, regardless of your age. The good news: While it’s normal to lose existing muscle as you get older, it’s possible at any age to build new muscle to replace it. To find out how, [http://www.vokipedia.de/index.php?title=Benutzer:SteveClibborn4 Alpha Surge Male reviews] we asked doctors, physical therapists, personal trainers and dietitians to explain why older adults experience muscle loss and to advise them about how they can slow or reverse it. When it comes to muscle, the human body behaves like a slow-motion roller coaster: It spends years ascending, peaks, then falls precipitously. "The body gradually puts on muscle through your 30s and into your 40s, but from your 40s onward it becomes a lot harder to both maintain existing muscle and put on new muscle," says Jonathan Packer, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine physician at the University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore. Starting in their 40s, the average person loses approximately 8 percent of their muscle mass every decade, says rehabilitation physician Mooyeon Oh-Park, M.D., chief medical officer and senior vice president at Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, New York.

"Between ages 40 and 80, you lose almost 40 percent of your muscle," Oh-Park says. "That’s muscle size, or mass. If you feel like you’re weaker than you used to be, that’s because you probably are, says Wendy Batts, a regional master instructor for the National Academy of Sports Medicine and assistant professor of exercise science at PennWest California in California, Pennsylvania. Most Americans are at their heaviest by the time they reach middle age, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), which says the average adult in the U.S. 30 pounds from age 20 to age 50. In fact, obesity rates are highest among adults ages 40 to 59, 46.4 percent of whom are obese, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). "When we’re older, we tend to be more sedentary, so the weight we gain starts being more and more fat and less and less muscle," says Atul Patel, M.D., a physical medicine and rehabilitation physician at Kansas City Bone & Joint Clinic in Overland Park, Kansas, and treasurer of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.

The combination of less muscle and more weight can worsen the negative health impacts of obesity. Falls are the leading cause of death among adults 65 and older, according to the CDC, which says 3 million older adults visit emergency rooms each year because of falls. Researchers say muscle weakness plays a major role in fall risk. "There are so many older adults who cannot even get out of a chair without using their hands, and that in and of itself is a fall risk. That signals that their legs are no longer strong enough to get them up," says physical therapist Jennifer Nash, an associate professor of physical therapy at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, and a certified exercise expert in aging adults. "A lot of older adults … While it’s critical to grow and maintain muscle as you age, many older adults have conditions that make exercise in general - and strength training in particular - more difficult.

That’s why it’s important to consult a doctor, physical therapist or certified fitness professional before you begin an exercise program, Oh-Park notes. "(Older adults) may have arthritis, for example, or they may have tendonitis," she says. However, having a condition like arthritis doesn’t mean you can’t build strength. It means you might have to do it differently. "Movement of any kind … George LeBus, M.D., an orthopedic shoulder, knee and sports medicine surgeon with Texas Orthopaedic Associates, OrthoLonestar, in Fort Worth, Texas, echos this: "Movement and therapeutic exercise are some of the best treatments for arthritis. While some health conditions make strength training more difficult, osteoporosis is one that can benefit from it. "Osteoporosis, characterized by weakened and brittle bones, increases the risk of fractures," Batts says. "Older adults with osteoporosis may need to avoid high-impact exercises and focus on low-impact activities that promote bone and muscle health without increasing the risk of injury.

Muscle health and joint health are closely related. "For example, one of the primary causes of knee pain at all ages is weakness in the hips, the core and the quads. Because when your muscles are weak, it puts more stress on the joints," Packer says. When you have a chronic disease, you might lose even more muscle at an even faster rate. "Some medical conditions - having a baseline like diabetes or heart disease, for example - can make you lose muscle mass in an accelerated manner," Oh-Park says. Among the many conditions that can cause muscle loss or muscle weakness are hormonal diseases like Addison’s disease and hypothyroidism; neurological conditions like multiple sclerosis and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS); kidney disease; infections like flu, Lyme disease and meningitis; and cancer. Extended hospital stays can be disastrous for muscle health. In a 2024 issue of the journal Geriatric Nursing, for example, researchers reported a 2 to 5 percent decline in muscle mass per day among hospital patients on bed rest. Immobile older adults can lose up to 10 percent of their muscle mass during a seven-day hospital stay, and reduced muscle mass can cause up to a 40 percent reduction in muscle strength, they added. "If you’re going to be in the hospital for any reason, I would make an effort to try to get up as much as possible - as long as you’re cleared by the medical staff and [http://user-sfr.nnov.org/common/redir.php?https://chessdatabase.science/wiki/Introducing_Alpha_Surge_Male:_Your_Ultimate_Testosterone_Support_And_Performance_Booster Alpha Surge Male reviews] can do so safely," Packer says.
